Prepare for Windows 10 End of Support: What It Means and How to Stay Ahead

3 minute read

Windows 10 will reach end of support on October 14, 2025. If your organization is among the many still relying on this trusted operating system, it’s critical to start planning your migration strategy now. End of support doesn’t just mean Microsoft stops issuing updates—it can expose your organization to significant business risks.

What Does Windows 10 End of Support Mean?

When Microsoft officially ends support for Windows 10, several critical updates will no longer be available, including:

  • Security patches: Windows 10 vulnerabilities will no longer be addressed, leaving systems running the OS vulnerable to cyberattacks.

  • Bug fixes: Problems or performance issues with Windows 10 will no longer be resolved.

  • Technical support: Microsoft will no longer offer assistance for issues related to Windows 10.

For businesses, this lack of support could create significant challenges:

  • Increased security risks: Unpatched systems are prime targets for cybercriminals.

  • Compliance concerns: Many industries require businesses to use supported, secure software to comply with regulations.

  • Compatibility issues: New software may not be compatible with an unsupported operating system, potentially disrupting workflows.

Why Act Now?

Although Windows 10 end of support is months away, we recommend starting to transition now. Migrating from Windows 10 to Windows 11 (or higher) isn’t a quick switch—it requires careful planning and execution. Delaying your migration could result in:

  1. Disruption to operations: A rushed transition may lead to downtime or unexpected technical issues.

  1. Increased costs: Emergency upgrades often cost more than planned migrations.

  1. Missed opportunities: Staying on an outdated OS can hinder your ability to adopt new technologies or integrate modern tools.

What Are Your Options?

Many organizations are asking:

  • Can I still use Windows 10 after 2025? While you can technically continue using Windows 10 after October 2025, it is highly discouraged. Without security updates, your system will become increasingly vulnerable to threats, which could lead to data breaches, compliance violations, or operational disruptions.

  • Can I upgrade my Windows 10 to 11 for free? Yes but conditions apply. If your device meets the minimum hardware requirements for Windows 11, the upgrade is free up until the Windows 10 retirement date. However, older devices may not qualify, necessitating hardware upgrades. And if you want to upgrade to Windows 11 Pro, for those who have Windows 10 Home, that will also require a new license.

  • Should I move to Windows 11? For most organizations, the answer is yes. Windows 11 offers enhanced security, productivity features, and support for the latest applications. However, you should first take time to evaluate your business needs and goals to decide which version is best for you.
